Studies on the Death Orientations in Korean Shamanism


Abstract
Death is the last process of life, and nobody escape from it. Nurses have more opportunities to take care of dying patients, this was traditionally done by their family members.
The goals of this article is to study about death orientations presented in shamanism, which is basis of Korean religious culture. The shamanistic ceremonies for the dead spirit were selected for analysis, because they are administrated for the dead by shaman at the request of the families and their relatives. Especially the structuers, contents, and the symbolic meanings of the shamanistic ceremonies for the dead spirit were precisely analyzed. Finally, the death orientations of shamanism were compared with them of the Christian religion, which marks first rank of the religious distributions in Korea.
The results of this study were summarized as followings
1. Man is separated spirits and fresh when he is dead, and then goes to the world of spirit.
2. The world of spirits is naturally dirty, therefore the dead spirit have the dirt of death. But, these phenomena are one thing, and their behaviors during lives another. This is only the rituals of passage.
3. The dead spirits need to convert the dins of death into the spirits of ancestor which are worshiped as a ancestor.
4. The shamanistic ceremonies of the dead spirit are focused on magical rituals, which is supposed to convert the dirt¡¯s of death into the ancestor spirits. This rituals are based on the idea of differentia-tion the world of dead spirits from ancestor spirits.
Above findings about Korean death orientation need to be utilized in client-centered hospice care for dying nursing clients.
